Film on Wax
‘Keeping Time’ & ‘It’s A Soul’ + Q&A
Film on Wax is a new screening series at Pastiche, dedicated to short music films that bring depth, context, and spirit to the kinds of music we celebrate in the shop.
Our first edition explores music, memory, and home — how music becomes a connective tissue to the past, and a way of maintaining continuity with the people and places that shape us.
We’ll screen Keeping Time by Darol Olu Kae, a portrait of LA drummer Mekala Session as he takes on leadership of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra — a legendary collective in the city’s avant-garde jazz scene. The film is a kaleidoscopic homage to the musicians and communities that carry the magic forward.
Alongside it is It Is a Soul: A Portrait of Hailu Mergia by Adam Golfer, a meditative short on the Ethiopian jazz legend. Once a star in Addis Ababa’s nightclub scene, Mergia fled political violence in the 1970s and spent decades quietly making music in Washington, DC. The film is shaped by the feeling of tezeta — an Ethiopian song form that expresses memory, longing, and loss all at once.
After the screening, we’ll host a Q&A with Mekala Session, the protagonist of Keeping Time.
All events are limited to 50 tickets / seats only.
