Mejiwahn
Live Sound Collage / USA
Mejiwahn is a musician/producer based in Oakland, California whose music feels like a journey through dusty record shops and smoke-filled Jazz clubs toward a secluded forest in the mountains; with a pit-stop in Copacabana. He has a relaxed yet intricate style that overlaps lo-fi hip hop, R&B, samba and bossa nova, meeting the Los Angeles beat scene when it crosses into experimental jazz psychedelia. Over a decade ago, Mejiwahn arrived in California and never left. A childhood of frosty winters waiting for Spring could be why his music sounds like bottled up sunshine; a field of wildflowers in bloom.
His debut album, Lúil Ó Fadó featured frequent collaborators like Cheflee and Shungu, laying out a Brazilian-influenced sound that was calming and approachable, and yet filled with the layers and unexpected quirks that reward repeated close listens. Many first encountered Mejiwahn’s work producing the bulk of Dallas R&B singer Liv.e’s 2020 album Couldn’t Wait To Tell You, a breakout debut heralded by the likes of Pitchfork and The New Yorker.
Since then, he’s shared stages playing his music and spinning vinyl DJ sets with like-minded artists like Mndsgn and Pedro Martins. Last year, he accompanied Brainfeeder signee and fellow Oakland artist Salami Rose Joe Louis on a tour through the United Kingdom. His name has also begun to dot the production credits of some of the luminaries of the new rap and r&b underground like Melanie Charles, Pink Siifu, Fly Anakin and Demahjiae.
Onlookers have also taken to Mejiwahn’s distinct visual aesthetic through his various alter-egos. As graphic designer Arlington Lowell, he creates artwork for all of his own releases, and served as creative director on Couldn’t Wait To Tell You. Through his boutique video production house flatspot_ he’s become a coveted video director/editor with a roster of clients that has included Toro y Moi, Ms. Lauryn Hill, the poet Aja Monet, Peggy Gou, Jon Bap, Ovrkast, Sofie Royer, Devin Morrison, and many more.
In 2022 Mejiwahn released his second album, Beanna. Vinyl Me, Please pressed an exclusive, limited release of the LP and the album was boosted by outlets like Bandcamp Daily, CLASH Magazine, Okayplayer and The Fader. A testament to how his music straddles genres, NPR chose a track from the album called Lumaby as one of their best Jazz songs of the year while Pitchfork featured Justheweed, a blunted single with verses from Zeroh and Lojii as it’s “must-hear rap song of the day.”
When he’s not making a beat or editing a music video for your favorite up-and-coming artist, Mejiwahn is an in-demand vinyl DJ. Recent mixes from his monthly subscription series Recommended Records, were featured on dublab & Worldwide FM, and he’s played frequent sets for underground jazz shows thrown by Los Angeles’ Minaret Records, which encompass the eclectic, globe-spanning collection that has informed and influenced his sound.
